Description of Votes on Choice Bills and Amendments

1. SB 182 (Sen. Patrick): Mandatory Medical Interference: Ultrasounds:
This Bill would have unnecessarily required physicians to perform an ultrasound prior to abortion care (most already do); required physicians to “provide . . . and review with the woman” i.e. force women seeking abortion care (for whatever reason) to view an ultrasound image.

  1. The 1st scored vote was taken on the bill in the Senate State Affairs Committee on 3/23/2009. A pro-choice vote was a "nay" vote against the bill.
  2. A 2nd scored vote to consider the bill on the Senate floor was taken on 4/30/2009 A pro-choice vote was a "nay" vote against suspending the rules to consider the bill.
  3. A 3rd scored vote was taken on the bill on the Senate floor on 5/1/2009. Sen. Shapleigh offered an amendment to remove medically inaccurate information linking abortion to breast cancer from state mandated materials. This amendment failed adoption. A pro-choice vote was a "yea" vote for the amendment.

2. SB 1098 (Sen. Carona): Choose Life License Plates:
This Bill would have created 'Choose Life' license plates with the revenue going to unlicensed crisis pregnancy centers that provide medically inaccurate and coercive information.

  1. The 1st scored vote to consider the bill on the Senate floor was taken on 4/30/2009. A pro-choice vote was a "nay" vote against suspending the rules to consider the bill.
  2. A 2nd scored vote was taken on amending the TXDOT sunset Bill (HB 300) to include 'Choose Life' plates on 5/25/2009. A pro-choice vote was a 'nay' vote against the adoption of the amendment.
