Whole Woman's Health responds to Operation Rescue's allegations

In early March 2011, Operation Rescue released a report entitled "Widespread Abortion Abuses in Texas Exposed." The claims made in this report were based on deceptive undercover telephone calls and visits to 12 clinics across the state. In our many years of work with Texas abortion clinics, we at NARAL Pro-Choice Texas have found clinic providers and staff to be some of the most caring, committed, and hardworking people we have ever encountered, and the overwhelming majority of them care passionately about women, reproductive health, and the quality of the services they provide. Below you will find a response to Operation Rescue from our friends at Whole Woman's Health clinics.

March 11, 2011 UPDATE FROM WHOLE WOMAN'S HEALTH OF MCALLEN: "Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) completed an investigation at Whole Woman’s Health of McAllen. The attorney at the TDSHS informed us today that the investigation was closed and that the TDSHS did not find any violations. Allegations had previously been made about Whole Woman’s Health of McAllen by anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, whose self-described purpose is to close abortion clinics. TDSHS responds to all complaints. They came to Whole Woman’s Health, interviewed staff, completed an on-site investigation and found these allegations to be without merit."

Dear friends and allies of Whole Woman’s Health:

You may have already heard, or if not you will soon hear, from Operation Rescue about allegations of health and safety violations at 12 abortion care clinics in Texas. Whole Woman’s Health clinics are featured in their "report."

As you are well aware, Whole Woman’s Health owns and operates high-quality abortion care facilities. We are inspected annually by state and federal agencies in every one of our clinics, as are many of you. We are also members in good standing with the National Abortion Federation and the Abortion Care Network. We stand up for women and are committed to providing the excellent care we are known for, even amid these relentless attacks. We ask for your support during this time – send your good vibes and comment positively online in news stories whenever possible.

Suffice it to say, we have initiated legal action and are working with the support of the Center for Reproductive Rights and other allies. As you might expect, much of what is presented on their website is misrepresented, contrived, doctored or taken without permission.

Below is our press release. Again, thank you for your support,

Amy Hagstrom Miller, President and CEO

STATEMENT REGARDING OPERATION RESCUE ALLEGATIONS

Whole Woman’s Health clinics provide high quality, compassionate abortion care for women.

The simple truth is that these people are determined to take away a woman's right to choose abortion - by any means necessary.

The truth is that abortion care in Texas is more highly regulated than most any other medical service. Whole Woman's Health adheres to Texas laws and regulations. We are in compliance with and inspected annually by local, state and federal agencies as well as our national membership organizations.

The truth is that the Department of State Health Services responded to these allegations immediately with an on-site inspection and determined them to be unfounded.

“If you remember one thing from all of this,” said CEO Amy Hagstrom Miller, “remember that Whole Woman's Health clinics offer high quality abortion care. We are respected throughout the State of Texas and nationally as a high quality abortion provider. We are deeply committed to caring for the women of Texas.”

If any member of the legitimate press is interested in a tour of our clinic and an interview with Ms. Hagstrom Miller, please call 512-835-6858.
