Facts on Abortion & Texas Women

  • 43% of American women will have an abortion by the age of 45.1

  • 93% of Texas' 254 counties have no abortion provider.2

  • Between 1996 and 2000, the number of abortion providers throughout the U.S. declined 11%.3

  • 61.6% of all abortions in Texas occurred at 8 weeks or less. 78.4% of the total numbers of abortions in Texas were performed by 10 weeks gestation. Only 4.9 % of abortions were performed at 17 weeks or later (2002).4

  • Teenage minors obtained 4.6% of abortions in Texas. The majority of abortions were obtained by women ages 20-24 (2002).5

  • Nationally, 61% of minors who have abortions tell their parents.6

  • Married women obtained 19.6% of abortions in Texas. Unmarried women obtained 74% (2002).7

  • 32.8% of abortions in Texas were obtained by Caucasian women, 20.5% by black women, and 35.2% were obtained by Hispanic women (2002).8
