Let Clinics Do Job

RESPONSE: Recently, state Sen. Kevin Eltife was expressing his concern over the fact that UT Tyler's medical clinic was giving away condoms. This has been the position of the Christian right for some time. And, it is true, abstinence is the only policy that can protect 100 percent against the dangers of unprotected sex. However, abstinence only policy, to be frank, kills people. To believe that college-age adults will embrace an abstinence only policy is ludicrous.

Studies have shown making condoms available to sexually active adults, along with sex education saves lives, prevents disease and stops abortions.

So I offer an olive leaf to the Christian Right. Let the medical community do what it does best. Stopping disease and educating the public. To the Christian community, I urge prayer. To quote Paul. "But thru the power of the Holy Spirit you put to death the deeds of the sinful nature, you will live." Not once during this debate have I heard the church community call for prayer to change the hearts of these young people. From what I know of the Bible, it seems that The Almighty, changes people's heart, then behavior will change. The Christian community is so wrapped up in what people do, it seems they could care less where there soul is.

Let the medical community save lives, they do that best. To the church, stick to saving souls. If we each concentrate on what we do best, then we can both prevent disease, misery, and death. Which is what I hope is something we all sincerely want.
