Teenagers sexually curious
Letter to the Editor Waco Tribune-Herald November 17, 2007 In response to "Stop spread to Marlin" I have to say that as a young person, I completely disagree with Rusty Lee Thomas. It is ignorant and foolish to blame Planned Parenthood for the issues affecting today’s youth. Planned Parenthood isn’t responsible for the "emotional and spiritual harm that plagues our children today" in even the most remote way. Today’s youth are no more sexually promiscuous than the generations before us. A part of being a teenager is being sexually curious. Whether anyone likes that idea or not, whether you agree with that idea or not, it is a fact. We’re growing up; we’re not children anymore. That’s pretty much what hitting puberty means. Maybe if schools and parents weren’t so concerned with teaching abstinence-only sex education, and maybe if adults weren’t so afraid of the fact that teenagers are having sex, so many girls wouldn’t be having children or abortions, and so many teenagers wouldn’t be contracting STDs. The "spread" of Planned Parenthood just means more people, including young people, will act responsibly. Planned Parenthood doesn’t aid the spread of STDs or abortion. The last time I checked, abortions aren’t contagious. Planned Parenthood does more than perform abortions. It helps teenage mothers deliver and care for babies. It provides emergency contraceptives to girls who need them. It helps treat STDs. Planned Parenthood gives today’s youth a way to prevent and protect ourselves the way no one else will.
